“We’re reaching out to Transport Canada to say, there are some very serious issues that you’re trying to forgo or pass off or divest. In response to the study’s findings, Saugeen Ojibway Nation issued a renewed call to the federal government to not engage in any further discussions related to divesting or dredging its port until it addresses, in consultation with SON, the potential health and environmental risks in the harbour. A summary of the three-year study of the federally owned port, released Friday by SON, also includes a warning that disturbing the sediment, such as by dredging, would amplify the potential risks and should not happen without a full evaluation of the potential impacts by qualified experts. The Owen Sound harbour is highly polluted with contaminant levels that pose a risk to fish, aquatic life and, potentially, humans who are exposed to its sediment, according to a Saugeen Ojibway Nation-Trent University study.
